Richard E. Smith & Co. was organized May 1, 1985 as the successor to the Marin County based practice of Fox & Company (formerly a national public accounting firm). In 1985, Fox & Company merged with Alexander Grant & Co. The merged firms proposed to consolidate Fox's Marin practice with Grant's practice in San Francisco and requested that Richard E. Smith, a Fox partner, relocate to Seattle. Rather than relocate, Mr. Smith elected to withdraw from the Fox partnership and establish his own practice.

The genesis of the practice originated in 1969. Unlike other national accounting firms, Fox specialized in smaller, privately-owned businesses and non-profit organizations. We continue with that standard, and, by choice, we have elected to maintain the size of our firm at a level which allows us to provide personal service to our clients. Our clients call upon us for a wide range of advisory services. We feel we are experts in working with smaller organizations and high-income individuals, meeting our clients' unique needs, solving their problems, and helping them grow. Typically, the size of our business clients is in the $2 to $15 million annual revenue range.
